Fashion and Online Dating

lavalife, originally uploaded by photoattitude.

It's official: I've hit the lowest of lows.
I have joined lavalife.
I have done the undoable.
I've put my entire life online. This is insane. I said I will never do it. I spend enough time as it is online. I don't need to be dating my laptop on top of everything else!
So, in this surreal landscape, I'm wondering about trying to find someone that would be interesting enough and not creepy enough to connect with.

Within a few minutes, I was getting winks and smiles from three men in their late 50's and 60's. One guy in his mid 30's seems so concerned about getting STD's you'd think he's actually a computed chip threatened by the latest aggressive PC virus... Crawling back to the corner and hiding for a while, gasping for air... I re-emerged as a gay guy and noticed that all the cute guys, but seriously - all of them! - are gay. It's too bad I'm not a gay guy!

The boys interested in girls range from mysterious (with neither pics nor info in their profile) to extremely unattractive, and the less there is in their profile the more they bug you desperately to pay attention to them. But there is one interesting common thread: most of the guys that are in their mid 30's to mid 40's and look "good on paper" (they seem to have a real meaningful job and know how to write without spelling mistakes) seem to have one common interest. You'll never guess. It's fashion. Yes, F-a-s-h-i-o-n!
Can you even believe it? Does it really take 30-something years for a guy to figure out that fashion is important and can also be fun? Or is just that it took them that long to figure out that most of us ladies are really into it?

A couple of days into the game, I'm finding myself enjoying the new internet addiction (as if I didn't have enough): counting "smiles" and digging for meaningful relationships in the three-word and two line conversations in the chat rooms. Nada. But some cute faces do appear. Sometime. And also a few very unlikely people who are interested in me even though they would be the last on my list. The chances I will be doing inline skating, scuba-diving, skiing, water skiing and hokey playing all in one date (their "ideal" one) are less than just slim.

I have to admit, I don't know what's the etiquette for giving out emails or "real" contact info. What's safe? What's considered ladylike and what is just plain pathetic? I'm in desperate need for advice, cuz the last thing I want to do is come across as desperate. Which I'm not. I can go and watch a movie by myself and take myself on lovely dates and dinners and have a great time. I just think it would be fun to do this with someone else, sometimes.

What will the future hold? You'll hear about it later as it unfolds... I'll let you know after I come back from a first date in a fashion show, which seems to be the date of choice for most eligible batchelors LOL!
